A NEW partnership struck between Cardigan Foodbank and Aldi has allowed ‘just-in-date’ fresh food to be used to help the needy rather than being thrown away.

Tom Jones, manager of Aldi’s Cardigan store, said such a move helped reduce food waste within the industry as well as providing a lifeline for those in need.

“We are aware of the work the Cardigan Foodbank do and are delighted to help in this way,” he said.

For several months foodbank staff have been collecting the food from Aldi three times a week.

It is then sorted and made available at the foodbank’s headquarters at New Life Christian Centre in Quay Street where people can come and help themselves.

“This has become a real bonus for those that find it very difficult to make ends meet,” said foodbank manager Phil Buckman.

“Our normal emergency food parcels require a voucher gained and referred by one of several local social support agencies and we are only allowed to give non-perishable food."
