A MANCHESTER United fan from Aberystwyth has described the scenes at Old Trafford on Sunday after their match was abandoned due to a bomb scare.

The club’s last game of the season against Bournemouth had to be abandoned and thousands of fans were either prevented from entering the ground or evacuated after a suspected bomb was found in toilets.

It has since emerged that the device, which was later destroyed in a controlled explosion by the Army’s Bomb Disposal Unit, was in fact a replica bomb left behind by a private firm after a training exercise.

Season ticket holder Arfon Jones, a former Aberystwyth Police Superintendent and Ceredigion Divisional Commander, said he didn’t make it into the ground because police and club stewards had started the evacuation before he entered Old Trafford.

Mr Jones told the Cambrian News this week: “Everyone outside was pushed back towards the car park and it became full quite quickly.

“There wasn’t much panic – more curiosity and people frustrated at not being allowed in.

“I think it was a brave decision to keep people in the ground, but a very good decision in my opinion because it may have stopped people being trampled.”
