CHWILOG man Dylan Fôn Thomas is one of around 5,000 people in Wales living with Dystonia, a neurological movement disorder.
Dylan’s dystonia affects his spine, meaning he often struggles to walk and suffers intense spasms that affect his entire body.
The dystonia started suddenly around eight years ago. Since then Dylan has lived with parents, Sandra and Gwilym, and needs around the clock care.
A new documentary, DRYCH: Dylan a Titw i Ben Draw’r Byd, which airs tonight, uncovers Dylan’s unique relationship with his carer, Titw.
Dylan said: “When this started, I tried to be strong, but some days I would just break down. In the beginning especially, there was a period of almost two years stuck in bed. When my body locks, it’s a nightmare for Mum and Dad, its 24/7. To be honest, I don’t know what we’d do without Titw.”
Carer Graham Thomas, known as Titw, provides invaluable support to the family.
He said: “I work with Dylan for around 30 hours a week. I look after him, prepare food, make him a cuppa - whatever he needs really. I hadn’t heard of the condition before. The first time I saw Dylan having an episode, I was shocked. I never thought it was possible for a person to twist and turn like that.”
Forty-year-old ex-kickboxer Dylan dreams of travelling to Bardsey Island.
“Something has always drawn me to it,” he said. “There’s something magical about the place. It might be in our blood around here. Enlli is an island, a place of peace - paradise even. A place to escape my troubles.”
Titw’s commitment means he will move mountains to help Dylan.
He said: “We will do everything in our power to take Dylan to Enlli. But my concern is, how will he be on the day? How will he get on the boat? What if he gets an episode on the boat or on the island? That’s what worries me.”
Will Dylan realise his dream? Find out in DRYCH: Dylan a Titw i Ben Draw’r Byd on S4C this Sunday, 3 October, at 9pm.
