A FORMER nurse says she has been left suicidal and “imprisoned in her own home” after the decision was made to take away her Motability car.
Beverlea Ventress, 60, was forced into early retirement 10 years ago due to a range of debilitating conditions, including osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, which prevented her from continuing her work in a Tywyn nursing home.
Beverlea says many of her conditions were caused or exacerbated by her breast cancer treatment after she bravely battled the cruel disease over a decade ago.
After years of receiving Disability Living Allowance, Beverlea underwent an assessment last year and was shocked to find out that they were reducing her status and that she no longer qualified for a specialised car as part of the new Personal Independence Payment (PIP) legislation.
She appealed the decision but was told last week that the decision stood.
Speaking to the Cambrian News soon after her appeal was refused, a devastated Beverlea said: “I have no quality of life, no time to speak to my friends or simply go through knitting patterns in the wool shop in Dolgellau. I don’t think that’s a lot to ask but I’m just a prisoner in my house.
“It’s been over six months now and I’ve noticed a real decline in my mental and physical health."
When asked about the situation, a DWP spokesperson said: “Decisions for PIP are made following consideration of all the information provided by the claimant, including supporting evidence from their GP or medical specialist.
“As has happened in this case anyone that disagrees with a decision can appeal, and has the opportunity to provide further evidence in support of their claim.”
