A former army captain from Aberystwyth has launched an ambitious fundraising project in aid of Blind Veterans UK.

Captain (Retired) Colin Jones MBE launched his three-year fundraising campaign in Cardiff last week, alongside the team that will attempt to complete a string of challenging ventures.

The team includes his son Kristian, also from Aberystwyth, as well as a celebrity in the form of Wales rugby captain and British and Irish Lion, Ryan Jones.

The first event, on 5 September, will see a team from the Royal Welsh, accompanied by Ryan Jones, attempt to run from Maindy Barracks in Cardiff to Hightown Barracks in Wrexham by 3pm the following day.

The event will consist of four runners completing 33.5 miles each of a total 134 miles.

The relay challenge is the first part of a three-year fundraising campaign in aid of Blind Veterans UK, with other challenges seeing the team take on blindfolded ascents of Pen-y-Fan and Snowdon and a blindfolded walk from Blind Veterans UK’s Llandudno Centre to Hightown Barracks, Wrexham.

“The dedication and commitment of the Blind Veterans UK charity is second to none, and after a full and colourful military career I just enjoy the opportunity and challenge of being in a position to support this wonderful charity,” Colin said.
