A PORTHMADOG man has completed a gruelling six-peak challenge for charity.
Gonks Hughes, along with friends Dean Richardson, Eddy Fray and driver Dylan Pritchard, took on the three-peak challenge of Snowdon, Scaffell Pike and Ben Nevis, before also climbing Pen-y-Fan, Cader Idris and Snowdon again, all in 36 hours.
The team completed the impressive feat in 34 hours and 17 minutes.
Gonks, a tree surgeon, was raising money for a specialist eye charity after his wife, Steffanie, was diagnosed with an eye tumour in 2015.
Gonks said: “My wife was treated at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and still goes there for regular six-monthly check ups.
“As this type of cancer is not as well known as others, and they were exceptional with my wife, we have decided to help their charity so that they can continue to be there for future patients. The aim of the charity is to raise funds to purchase specialist equipment and improve facilities for patients and staff. The £10m appeal will help them go beyond the NHS promise of care to create a world-class new Royal hospital.”
Speaking on the challenge, he added: “It was gruelling but also enjoyable at the same time."
