Madam,
I was pleased to see the article on page 18 of the Cambrian News of 31 October, with the heading ‘Poet’s descendants unveil memorial stone’.
The subject, T E Nicholas, (Niclas y Glais ), died at his home in Aberystwyth, where he had lived for many years, on 19 April 1971, aged 91. He lived a very eventful life and was very well-known throughout Wales. There is a good Wikipedia page about him. He was known as ‘The People’s Poet’. He won over 17 Eisteddfod chairs.
Your article did not mention some facts which are likely to be of interest to your readers. In Ceredigion, Nicholas was a dentist, preacher and poet. He organized farm workers into a union and, in 1918, he established Ceredigion Labour Party in the county. Ceredigion Labour Party celebrated its centenary in 2018. There are archives of Nicholas’ works in Bangor University and in The National Library in Aberystwyth.
The main themes of his poetry were injustice, the battle between the working class and the power of capital, and pacifism. His poetry books and pamphlets - almost all written in Welsh - sold well.
It will be interesting to see his memorial stone at Crugiau Dwy and reflect on his full and eventful life.
Yours etc, Richard Wells, Pier Street, Aberystwyth.
