MOURNERS at a Cardigan funeral have slammed an “overzealous” traffic warden for booking a car carrying pallbearers when it was parked outside a town centre chapel.

The funeral service for well-known local character Dai ‘Radar’ Rees had been held at Bethania Baptist Chapel in William Street.

But when mourners emerged to find a Nissan Qashqai belonging to pallbearer Jamie Bowen had been ticketed there were cries of “disgraceful”, “outrageous” and “despicable”.

Mr Bowen, who was accompanied by three other pallbearers, had parked his car behind the funeral hearse and a limousine carrying the deceased’s immediate family in front of the chapel gates.

But an eagle-eyed council traffic warden spotted that the rear end of the Nissan overlapped the bay onto single a yellow line.

Mr Bowen, landlord of The Lamb Inn, said it was his first parking ticket in 25 years as a motorist.

“My car was not causing an obstruction and I was quite shocked to see a ticket on it,” he said. “It was a sad state of affairs on a very sad occasion.”

Undertaker Colin Phillips added: “I was absolutely amazed that a parking ticket was issued.”
