Meirionnydd Young Farmers held their stock judging competition of Welsh Black Cattle, Welsh Mountain Sheep and Welsh Mules at Waenfach farm, Llanegryn, Tywyn on 28 April with various clubs from around the county coming to gain points for the County Rally and win a place on the team for the YFC Stock judging competition for the Royal Welsh in July.
Many members attended and were welcomed by William and Bethan Davies and their son Rhys Davies to their home farm.
There was keen competition and friendly rivalry amongst the competitors.
Competitors judge the animal within each section, looking at their characteristics and confirmation. They place the animals in order of preference and present reasons to a judge as to why they have arrived to their judgements and point are given based on closeness of placings to the judges.
Elen Medi, Meirionnydd YFC chairman, said: “The judges were very impressed with the high standard of competing and the standard of confidence shown by all competitors. It has been a busy time for members in preparation for the stock judging and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the County Rally on 8 June at Bryn Celynog farm, Cwm Prysor, Trawsfynydd. It is one of the main events in the busy YFC calendar year and the Rally is a chance to showcase the talents and skills of young people within the community.”
AT Hafod Ifan farm, Ysbyty Ifan and at Cefn Gwyn, Bethel, Eryri YFC held their stock judging competition, in preparation for the Rally.
Between the three competitions, over 100 members competed from nearly all of the county clubs. Experienced judges in Welsh Mountain Pony Section A, Welsh Black Cattle and Welsh Mule Sheep chose the best of the best and winners have accumulated marks for the County Rally and won themselves a place to represent Eryri YFC in the Royal Welsh Show in July.
“Both evenings at Hafod Ifan and Cefn Gwyn were very successful and good attendance of members,” said Miriam Williams, county chairman.
“We are very grateful to both families for hosting us and for the quality of their stock for the competitions, and to everybody who have helped the County to judge and steward,” she added.
Points gained from the stock judging competitions will be added to the Rally total, which will be held on Saturday, 25 May at Tai Hirion, Padog, starting at 9.30am.
