TWO Aberystwyth art galleries are to close over the next month sparking calls for more to be done to let the arts thrive in Aberystwyth.

Cardigan Bay Gallery in Terrace Road will close on 27 June and Blossoms Gallery on Park Avenue will close at the end of July after the lease for both buildings expired.

Ceredigion County Council owns both buildings and had agreed temporary leases, but is now planning refurbishment work on the building in Park Avenue before trying to lease the building commercially.

The Cardigan Bay Gallery building will be used as part of the revamped Ceredigion Museum.

With two galleries closing so soon after each other, a spokesperson for Blossoms Gallery called for more to be done to provide facilities for the arts in Aberystwyth.

He said: “With so much creativity in Ceredigion we think it’s a great shame that the council doesn’t have a proper strategy for securing a long-term premises within Aberystwyth for artists studios, workshops, acoustic music, storytelling and theatre.

“It would be a great visitor attraction.

“Cardigan Bay Gallery is also closing at the end of the month, so we can only hope that something positive will present itself soon."
