A GIANT Welsh football shirt has appeared on the front of a house in Minllyn, Dinas Mawddwy.

Lynne Humphreys-McCrickett and John McCrickett have delighted passers-by with the enormous shirt which they put up last Saturday, just in time for Wales’ match in the delayed Euro 2020 competition.

The football fanatics made the shirt - which measures just over eight metres by five-and-a-half metres - in 2016 to show their support for Wales at the last Euro competition.

They decided to put it up again this year to show their support once more, and to cheer everyone one up.

“When we qualified again this year we thought we’d put it up again,” said Lynne, “but we had to make some changes. The white bits on their last kit are yellow now and we had to put different bands.”

The original design took two days to make and this year’s alterations took a day.

“Then it took us about four hours to put it up,” said Lynne.

But the effort is worth it to see the joy on people’s faces.

“There’s a school at the end of the road and the kids are so excited to see it again,” Lynne added.

“It’s a bit of fun for the kids and the adults! We’re expecting a few visitors to come and see it, but that’s the idea. And I hope the Welsh team get to see it on social media. A lot of people can’t go and support them this year because of the coronavirus and I want them to know people are supporting them at home.

“Things are very different this year but we still wanted to show our support. What better way to do that than by covering your house with a Welsh shirt!”

Support has flooded in for the couple’s giant shirt.

“Spirit of 58, the football merchandise shop in Bala, sent us a big flag to attach to the shirt and we don’t mind people sending us more things - the more the merrier,” said Lynne.

The couple have lost some windows as a result of putting the shirt up.

Lynne said: “We’ve got one-a-half-clear and there’s a nice red glow in the house, but we’ve had fun with it and we hope it will stay up for the whole month.”

Lynne and John met through their love of football, but John is not a natural Welsh supporter.

“He’s from Glasgow but he loves Wales and the Welsh team so he doesn’t mind the shirt at all.

“Despite being Scottish he got into all the excitement about Wales in 2016, and he’s even more excited this year because Scotland qualified as well.

“I’ll have to find a little corner somewhere for him to put up a Scottish flag!”
