In reply to a letter from Jean Miles titled ‘Time to help youngsters’, I wholeheartedly agree that youth clubs and youth groups are an important part of our communities.
Please be assured that the Scout Movement (and Girl guiding,Army Cadet Force, Air Cadet Force, etc) are ‘doing their thing’.
As a Girl guiding volunteer, I can only speak for our organisation. We have 75girls involved in units in just Barmouth and Tywyn. What restricts us is a lack of adult volunteers.
Adult/child ratios must be met in order to maintain a safe space for all of our members. Businesses are struggling to recruit paid members of staff, so imagine how hard it is for us to recruit unpaid volunteers.
The rewards that people gain from volunteering can far outweigh any monetary gain, and I know that our volunteers are not just worth their weight in gold, they are priceless. Covid has changed the world, but we all still can remember our Guiding Promise ‘I promise that I will do my best’.
If there are any readers out there who are interested in volunteering their time with Girl guiding, please go to www.girlguiding.org.uk/get-involved/ become-a-volunteer/registeryourinterest to find out more.
