A FASHION couple are hoping to go on the “journey of a lifetime” following a horrific cancer scare.

Sam Stratton Sims, 46, and Rhody Sims, 56, are hoping to fly their vintage plane from the southernmost tip of South America to Florida next year, taking in 19 different countries en route.

The Ushuaia2USA Vintage Air Rally takes place in March 2018 and features 15 vintage planes.

Over 675 teams have applied for the 15 spots, with all costs paid by the rally sponsors, offering the couple an almost unique opportunity.

The duo, who have lived in Llanbedr for the last 11 years, already enjoy a glamorous lifestyle as they are both involved in the fashion industry, Sam as a model and Rhody as a photographer.

However, the Sims have good reason for wanting to explore exotic new lands together.

“One of the main reasons is that in 2015 my husband was diagnosed with throat cancer,” explained Sam.

“During his treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy he vowed, should his recovery be successful, to buy himself a plane and enjoy as many adventures as possible.

“Thankfully, Rhody has made a full recovery but still has to see his oncologist every 12 weeks which is very stressful and brings memories of his treatment flooding back each time.

“He wants to live life to the full, understandably and this would be the journey of a lifetime.

“This journey, if it wasn’t paid for, would be too expensive for us to contemplate.”
