New welcoming street safe zone barriers have been installed in Aberaeron, thanks to a successful grant application by the town council.

After the creation of the safe zones by Ceredigion council in July last year, introduced to adhere to coronavirus restrictions, included redirecting traffic and widening pavements in Aberaeron to allow for social distancing and assist businesses, such as cafes, restaurants and pubs to trade in the open air.

The safe zones remain in operation this summer, and Aberaeron Town Council secured cash to help businesses continue trading and ensure public safety from the £200,000 Welsh Government Transforming Towns fund.

The grant was available for town councils to make applications that benefited businesses, where each town could apply for a maximum of 80 per cent of costs with the town council itself sourcing the remaining 20 per cent.

The council said it decided to take part in the scheme as “members felt that it was an excellent opportunity to help local businesses to reopen and to help the local tourism economy.”

The council consulted with businesses as to the type of street furniture that was needed and a package of £15,000 was approved.

The new barriers and furniture were delivered and put in place in time for the lifting of restrictions in May.

Aberaeron mayor Cllr Rhodri Jones said: “I am extremely proud that the town council has been able to support local businesses in this way as they continue to trade within Covid restrictions. The aim has been to create a safe and welcoming environment for people to enjoy our wonderful town.

“My thanks also goes to the former mayor, Cllr Darryl Evans, for his work liaising with the businesses which enabled us to secure this grant.”
