ABERYSTWYTH War Memorial Trust has once again been supporting some of the town’s most talented youngsters, clubs and organisations.

Hosted and presented by chairman Alun John and secretary Anthony Evans, the trust’s biannual awards were held at St Michael’s Church on Saturday, 15 December, where several clubs, organisations and individuals were presented with grants totalling £10,000.

Both reminded the audience of the history of the trust, which relies on income realised from surplus money collected to build the war memorial in Aberystwyth Castle grounds after the First World War.

The money raised was such that two buildings in Aberystwyth were bought and subsequently sold. That money was wisely invested and the interest provides the backbone of the scheme.

The clubs and organisations to be awarded with cheques were Aberystwyth Squash Club, Aberystwyth All Stars pan-disability football, Penrhyncoch FC and Aberystwyth Youth Jazz Ensemble.

In the individual section, cyclist Griff Lewis, basketball players Yasmin and Nazeem Bonner-Miah, and Angharad Lewis, a student physiotherapist awaiting a trip to Tanzania, were also presented with grants.

A letter was also read out from members of Razzmajazz, a young jazz band from Aberystwyth featuring Rhodri Davies, Nils Margraff-Turley, Tom Constantine, Joshua Ireland and Alan Phillips.

Razzmajazz have returned from Kronberg where they helped celebrate the 20th anniversary of twinning between the German town and Aberystwyth.

“We would like to thank you profusely for the kind donation you have given us in order for us to perform on an international stage,” the letter said. “This money has given us a chance to strengthen our relationship between the town of Aberystwyth and Kronberg."
