It was brilliant to read the news that Aberystwyth University is to offer nursing degrees from next year. Those involved in achieving this deserve our gratitude, and can be justifiably proud of the outcome of their hard work.

There is a trend in modern medicine towards bigger hospital units and centralisation, but in my experience, both as a surgeon and a consumer of healthcare, sometimes the best care can be found in well-run smaller units.

When a close relative of mine required critical care a few years ago, the treatment he received in Bronglais Hospital exceeded national standards and was delivered with great compassion.I am sure that the high-quality care provided by Bronglais, played no small part in bringing nursing degrees to Aberystwyth.

This development is good news for the university, good news for the community and good news for local healthcare.

It should help to secure the long-term future, and development of Bronglais Hospital.
