AN ABERYSTWYTH group is working on a new initiative that would allow more Syrian families to move to the town.

Aberaid, the local group set up to raise awareness and support Syrian refugees, held an Action Day at Friends Meeting House, Penparcau, where plans were discussed to move forward with the Community Sponsorship Programme.

This is a UK government initiative which enables groups to raise funds and organise to be able to bring a family or group of Syrian refugees into their community.

Three Syrian refugees joined the event and helped communicate how urgent the need is for people to be helped, and to develop their skills to allow them to sustain their families and contribute to society.

Attendee Siôn Meredith, who is warden of St Mair’s Church, Aberystwyth, said: “Syrian refugees in Ceredigion need all the friendship and support that the local community can offer.

“This event clearly shows that many local people are committed to supporting refugees who are already here, and to raise support to offer refuge to more people from war-torn Syria in Ceredigion.”

Aberaid plan to launch the Community Sponsorship programme in the New Year with a number of fundraising events.
