A group of spirited volunteers braved the elements to clean Tywyn’s beach.

Braving the cold winds, the Tywyn Beach Guardians and Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd joined forces for Surfers Against Sewage’s “Big Spring Beach Clean”.

A group of 43 volunteers of all ages collected 18 bags of marine rubbish weighing a total of 111.5 kg from the dunes and high tide line between Cemetery Beach and Tywyn in the space of just over two hours.

Volunteers were also asked to photograph any branded rubbish during the clean in order to collect important data for Surfers Against Sewage’s plastic pollution brand survey.

“It was fantastic to see so many people out on the day,” said lead volunteer Heather Broster.

“We found loads of fishing rope, bottle tops, water bottles, crisp packets, and one of our volunteers even found a Michelin tyre!”

In October last year, Tywyn Town Council committed its support to gaining ‘Plastic-Free Status’ for Tywyn from Surfers Against Sewage.

This event brings Tywyn one step closer to achieving that goal this year.

The Tywyn Beach Guardians and Greener Tywyn Gwyrdd hold regular beach cleaning events in the area.
