13 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded today in Ceredigion.

These new cases take the county’s seven-day total to 86 with an infection rate of 118.3 cases per 100,000 population, the standard measurement of infection across the UK.

Of those 86 cases in the last seven days, 51 have been recorded in the Rheidol, Ystwyth and Caron region, which covers as far east as Ponterwyd, surrounding areas of Aberystwyth such as Llanbadarn and Penparcau and south towards Llanilar and Tregaron.

Elsewhere, Gwynedd recorded 11 new cases today, taking its seven-day total to 64 and giving the county an infection rate of 51.4.

Powys recorded 14 new cases, taking the weekly total to 149 and giving the county an infection rate of 112.5.

Carmarthenshire recorded 34 new cases today, taking its seven day total to 245 while Pembrokeshire recorded 11 new cases, making it 62 for the week.

Across Wales, 797 new cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours and 29 new deaths have also been attributed to Covid-19.

Of those deaths, two have been recorded in the Hywel Dda region of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire and 10 new deaths have been recorded by Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board in North Wales.

Powys has recorded no new deaths with its total since March remaining at 20 deaths.

People in rural Wales were warned today to follow guidelines following a surge in Covid-10 cases in rural areas of Powys.

Recent increases in cases in Powys have been linked to social contact in rural settings including sites associated with agriculture and farming, resulting in numbers of residents having to self-isolate.

Stuart Bourne, Director of Public Health for Powys Teaching Health Board, said:

“We have seen an increase in case numbers in Powys where the route of infection is social contact in the farming community. These cases have a significant impact on our economy and also on education as many pupils have to self-isolate as confirmed contacts.

“Living in a remote or rural area, it can be tempting to think that Coronavirus will not reach us.

“But, Coronavirus can affect anyone. People in villages and farming communities in Powys are contracting the virus, and they are passing it on to others.”

Meanwhile, the people of Ceredigion have been praised for their efforts in keeping the spread of coronavirus down during the pandemic.

A multi-agency partnership set up to tackle the spread of Covid-19 in Ceredigion has praised the population for their efforts in keeping their communities safe over recent months.
