A former Ceredigion MP has won the backing of Borth Community Council as he bids to make the village a dementia-friendly community.
Mark Williams, the former Lib Dem MP who represented Ceredigion from 2005 until 2017, is campaigning to win Borth the status of being a dementia-friendly community and was supported by the community council after making his case at their latest meeting.
Mr Williams, who is also chair of the North Ceredigion Forum for Elderly Care, said: “I have long been impressed by the work of the Alzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Action Alliance in encouraging communities to acquire the status of dementia-friendly community.
“I lost my mother Pauline to this crippling disease last year, and we could not fault the care she received and the support and understanding from her friends and neighbours in Borth.
“The Borth Surgery, the Art Group and the church were brilliant and empathetic.
“However, with our ageing population in counties like Ceredigion and places like Borth, without a cure in sight everyone needs to get on board and understand this illness and what we can do to preserve people’s dignity and independent living for as long as possible, and that involves us all.
“With the support of the community council we will now convene a meeting in the autumn with all those interested, health professionals, local employers and groups, our school and family centre, to develop our plans further."
