FORMER Ceredigion MP Mark Williams has spoken of the "bewilderment and anger" of Aberystwyth people over the threat to the Bodlondeb care home.

Mr Williams, speaking ahead of a public meeting which he is chairing, organised by the Save Bodlondeb Campaign , said a packed public meeting about the potential closure of Bodlondeb showed the concern around the availability of care services in north Ceredigion and insisted that more needed to be done to plan adequate care.

He said it was clear that the majority of people at the meeting had been supportive of retaining the home.

Mr Williams said: “Ceredigion County Council should be commended for organising this meeting as part of the consultation process, but they should be in no doubt about the strength of felling regarding Bodlondeb.

“While care at home is an option for some, it is not for many, and we were alarmed to hear of surplus places in the private sector while Bodlondeb faces closure, with many referrals being made out of they county.

“While I understand it is not the specific responsibility of Ceredigion County Council to provide nursing beds and dementia care, we fully expect the council to spearhead the drive for dementia facilities in the north of Ceredigion.

“With an ageing population our needs are growing and there is a sense of bewilderment and anger that Bodlondeb could close without sufficient alternatives being provided.”

The meeting takes place at Plas Antaron at 7pm on Monday, 24 July.
