Powys has recorded nine new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, according to statistics released by Public Health Wales this afternoon.

This takes Powys’ total to 346 confirmed cases of Covid-19 with Ceredigion also reporting one new confirmed case today.

Ceredigion now has 66 cases in total, with Carmarthenshire also recording one new confirmed case, taking its total to 807.

Pembrokeshire and Gwynedd have not recorded any new cases today.

The jump in Powys is in part attributed to a number of residents at a council-operated traveller site in Welshpool who have tested positive for Covid-19.

Cllr James Evans, Powys County Council’s Cabinet member for economic development, housing and regulatory services, said: “We can confirm that we are providing support for a number of residents at our Leighton Arches site who have tested positive for coronavirus. This is understandably an anxious time and we ask that local residents respect the privacy and dignity of all concerned.

“Every reasonable step is being taken to limit the spread of the disease and protect all local residents."

No new deaths have been recorded today (Friday, 24 July) in connection with Covid-19, leaving Wales’ total at 1,548 since the pandemic began.

Giving the daily briefing for Public Health Wales on Friday afternoon, Dr Robin Howe, incident director for the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak response at Public Health Wales, said: “We continue to caution and remind the public and business-owners that we all have a vital role in preventing the spread of coronavirus by always sticking to social distancing guidelines - staying two metres away from others, and washing hands regularly.

"When travelling you should also avoid car sharing with people outside your household.

"Anyone with suspected symptoms of Covid-19 infection - a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss of smell or taste (anosmia) - must self-isolate and seek an urgent test.

"Confirmed cases must isolate for seven days, with members of their household isolating for 14 days until the risk of passing on further infection has gone. Combined, these simple but effective actions will ensure the virus does not spread.
