BRONGLAIS Hospital’s A&E department performed better than any other A&E department in the Hywel Dda Health Board area in January, figures have revealed.

All of the major A&E units in the board area saw an increase in the number of patients attending at A&E in January compared to December last year, a trend that was repeated across Wales.

However, statistics have shown that a lower percentage of patients had to wait over four hours, over eight hours or over 12 hours at Bronglais than at the other major A&E units in Hywel Dda.

Bronglais saw 2,194 patients attend at A&E in January – with 1,905, or 86.8 per cent of those patients seen within four hours. That is compared to 82.3 per cent of the patients who attended at Glangwili being seen inside four hours and just 78.2 per cent in Withybush.

A total of 95.1 per cent of the patients who attended Bronglais were seen within eight hours and 97.4 per cent were seen inside 12 hours, with just 58 patients at Bronglais waiting more than 12 hours.

At Glangwili’s A&E department, 92.6 per cent were seen inside eight hours and 96.9 inside 12 hours, with the figures for Withybush showing that 92.3 per cent of patients were seen inside eight hours and 96 per cent inside 12 hours.

All of the Hywel Dda major A&E units saw a higher percentage of patients within the four hour, eight hour and 12-hour time frames than the Welsh average.
