LEISURE centres in Carmarthenshire will reopen on Monday - and residents aged 60 or over are being given two months’ free use.

This includes free use of the gym, swimming and exercise classes indoors or outdoors at any of the council’s leisure centres. The offer also extends to its Actif Anywhere platform of on-demand and live classes and its growing offer of adult community sessions, including cycling, walking sports and paddleboarding.

From Monday, May 3 Carmarthenshire County Council will reopen its leisure centres in Newcastle Emlyn, St Clears, Llanelli, Ammanford and Carmarthen following easing of Welsh Government Covid-19 restrictions. The new leisure centre at Llandovery will also open its doors for the first time.

The free rolling offer is for eight weeks and people can get a further eight weeks at half price.

The eight-week free period can be taken anytime between May 3 and March 31 2022, with the eight weeks at half price taken straight after.

They said a host of exciting improvements have been made across the centres during their closure, including a new leisure centre at Llandovery.

From Monday, and in line with Welsh Government guidelines, leisure centres can reopen gyms for individual sessions, lane swimming in the pools, one to one swimming lessons, indoor fitness classes and organised indoor sports bookings for up to 15 people.

The centres have already been operating free outdoor fitness classes, tennis, astroturf sports and athletics track sports and these will continue to be available, but spaces are limited and must be booked in advance via the Actif website or App.

The council’s Head of Leisure, Ian Jones said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the 60 plus age group free use of our facilities right across our centres for eight weeks. Whilst we have been taking part in successful online workouts for the past year with this age group, it will be so nice to welcome them back in person with the camaraderie they bring and experiences they have of working out together. We want to reassure our members and guests that we have worked diligently to ensure they can return and visit safely - we have robust Covid-19 safety measures in place and our leisure centres will be carefully managed to keep everyone safe.”
