CEREDIGION County Council will not be providing refill points for water along its stretch of the All Wales Coast Path as part of a Welsh Government initiative.
Free public access to drinking water will be available at “key communities” along the Wales Coast Path, the Welsh Government said, under plans to improve access to drinking water in public places across Wales to help reduce the use of single use plastics.
But Ceredigion council has told the Cambrian News it is not planning to provide refill points along the county’s coast, but would reconsider if “practical and sustainable”.
“Ceredigion County Council is fully supportive of plastic reduction initiatives in the county with towns such as Aberystwyth, New Quay and Aberporth all recently gaining ‘plastic-free’ status,” the council said.
“Currently Ceredigion County Council is not providing refill points along the Ceredigion and All Wales Coast Path; however should practical and sustainable opportunities for doing so arise, these will be investigated further.”
Environment Minister Hannah Blythyn announced last week that the 870-mile route was the first location for the roll out of a refill scheme for Wales.
The plans, which form part of the Welsh Government’s ambition to become the world’s first refill nation, were revealed at an Environmental Summit at the Volvo Ocean Race, in Cardiff.
The Environment Minister said they will commit to delivering refill into communities along the Wales Coast Path within the next year.
