CEREDIGION saw fewer births than any other Welsh county in 2015, statistics have revealed.

Figures on birth rates in Wales showed that 633 Ceredigion mothers gave birth last year, with 602 of those women giving birth at a Welsh hospital and 26 giving birth at home.

The total number of births to women who live in Ceredigion was almost half that of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, with 1,177 births in Pembrokeshire and 1,850 in Carmarthenshire. Powys recorded 1,111 births.

The next-lowest figure after Ceredigion was in Anglesey, where 693 women gave birth in 2015.

The statistics for Ceredigion show that 602 of the Ceredigion mothers had given birth in a Welsh hospital, with one person being taken to an English hospital.

Four women gave birth in an ambulance while being taken to hospital.

Vicky Richards, the national officer for Wales at the Royal College of Midwives, said while there had been a slight fall in birth numbers across Wales, there had been in increased number of births with complexities.

She said: “In terms of pressure on services, the slight fall in births is offset by the increasing complexity of births."
