A DAY centre for older people in Waunfawr that closed 15 months ago has been reopened as fears over the future of a town centre day centre persist.

MHA reopened its centre at Hafan y Waun Care Home on Monday to provide a “much-needed facility in the community,” manager Mandy Pilcher said.

The centre was previously run by Ceredigion County Council before budget cuts saw it closed in December 2016.

That centre was opened in 2012 to replace the one lost as the land was used for the Mill Street shopping development despite large scale protests five years ago.

The replacement day centre will be the subject of a review next year in further cost-cutting measures, but is “not currently” considered for closure.

The council said the town hall day centre “will be included in a review of day care provision” later this year.

The 10-place centre at Hafan y Waun opened its doors to clients on Monday, and services include a hairdresser, a chiropodist and “other facilities to help users stay independent".

It will be open from 9.30am to 3.30pm each Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
