MID and West Wales AMs Simon Thomas and Neil Hamilton have welcomed news that the future of a primary care centre in Machynlleth has been secured.

In July 2015, the Powys Teaching Health Board took on the direct management of Machynlleth Health Centre GP Practice due to sustainability concerns.

Since then, the board has worked hard to maintain services and the team at the health centre were recognised for their achievements and innovation in primary care earlier in 2016/17 when they won an NHS Wales Award.

On Wednesday, the Powys Teaching Health Board announced that Glantwymyn Health Centre will take on the contract for the practice from April 2017.

Mr Hamilton said: “This is excellent news and I am delighted that the future of the Machynlleth centre has been secured.

“It is a vital part of the community and this shows what can be achieved with hard work and when people co-operate together.

“Powys Teaching Hospital Board should also be congratulated for their role in ensuring that the primary care centre remained in Machynlleth.”

Mr Thomas said: “I welcome the plans that we help secure the future of primary medical care at Machynlleth Health Centre.

“My team will be scrutinising Powys Teaching Health Board to make sure the promised improvements are made.”
