ABERYSTWYTH Town Council has backed a motion calling for “all avenues” to be explored to save an under-threat Penparcau care home.
Councillors on Monday supported the motion tabled by Liberal Democrat Cllr Charlie Kingsbury, which came after Ceredigion council announced a consultation into the closure of the Bodlondeb Residential Care Home, as revealed in the Cambrian News.
Cllr Kingsbury, who represents Penparcau, said that Bodlondeb was a “vital service” to the Aberystwyth area and that “everything must be done” to attempt to save it.
Ceredigion council has said that attempts to go into partnership with Hywel Dda or to pass the facility into private hands had failed, leaving it with little option but to consult on the closure of the loss-making home which is currently home to around a dozen residents.
Cllr Kingsbury told members: “Bodlondeb is a significant and symbolic part of Penparcau, and its loss will be felt deeply.
“I am urging Ceredigion council to do what it can to save Bodlondeb.”
Cllr Kingsbury’s motion called on “Ceredigion County Council to explore all avenues to save Bodlondeb and ensure that there is continuing and unbroken provision of public residential care for the elderly in the Aberystwyth area”.
