OPTHAMOLOGY services could move out of Aberystwyth’s North Road clinic after the facility was called “not fit for purpose” by Hywel Dda’s Ceredigion county director.
Peter Skitt, the county director, has confirmed that options are being drawn up for the future of services currently sited at North Road, with a shortlist of potential options expected to be released toward the end of May.
The clinic currently houses opthamology services, as well as a sexual health clinic and dental clinics, but Mr Skitt said he was keen to see opthamology and dental services moved out of North Road and to another location closer to Bronglais Hospital.
Speaking to members of the Ceredigion committee of Hywel Dda Community Health Council, Mr Skitt said a new location would be more suitable than the clinic at North Road for some services.
He said: “We may have to move opthamology out of North Road to be honest as it’s just not fit for purpose for the number of people we’re trying to put through North Road.
“My preferred option would be to move out of North Road if possible and find another setting.
“Dental and opthamology are both things I’m looking at to get around Bronglais.”
Mr Skitt said he was keen to find an alternative location closer to the hospital to avoid staff who are based at the hospital having to travel down to North Road to provide clinics in some cases.
