FEARS have been allayed that bats and great crested newts could hold up the £7.8m redevelopment of Machynlleth Hospital (right).
A “vital step” in major plans to improve the hospital has been taken, with conservation area consent given by Powys planners for work to take place.
However, the full planning application has still to be decided on.
The redevelopment of the hospital is aimed at boosting the services available, including increased community-based services and possible outreach clinics.
The conservation area consent has been welcomed by local councillor Michael Williams and the health board.
That consent, granted by the planning department under delegated powers, covers the demolition of an existing extension and allows for replacement extensions.
But conditions have been imposed to protect bats, great crested newts and nesting birds.
Cllr Williams said: “I’m delighted that this part of the process has been given the go ahead.
“I’m pleased that the Welsh Government and Powys Health Board are looking favourably at refurbishing the hospital for Machynlleth that would serve the town and the wider area.”
A report into the conservation area development said planners needed to consider whether the demolition of the current extension would affect the conservation area. According to the report, the council’s built heritage officer has ruled that it would not.
It says: “The officer considered that the existing extension does not detract from the character or appearance of the conservation area, however the officer noted it could not be considered to make a positive contribution to the character or appearance of the conservation area and as such would be considered as neutral.
“The built heritage officer acknowledged the community benefits that would accrue from the proposed development and the merit of the design of the alternative proposal will be addressed in the full application.”
