ILL people in Machynlleth may not be seeking medical attention because they can’t get an appointment at the town’s GP surgery, a councillor has warned.
Cllr Noella Elliott said she was concerned that patients unable to get an appointment under the current system, especially pensioners, may give up on trying to see the doctor and could be putting their health at greater risk.
She said she had witnessed one lady leave the surgery without an appointment under the current system where patients have to phone up on the day to try and seek an appointment.
If the appointment slots are all filled in Machynlleth, patients will be offered available appointments at the Cemmaes Road surgery, but Cllr Elliott said that was not accessible to some people who don’t drive.
She said: “I’m very concerned. I just want to know if something can be done.
“I’m concerned about the elderly as they don’t want to bother anyone or be a fuss.”
Cllr Glenda Jenkins said she also had concerns about people not being able to get appointments, but said she was aware that the health centre was currently trying to recruit another GP.
She said: “I do understand they’re short of doctors and when they recruit that doctor it’ll ease, but at the moment it is a mess.”
Dr Jon Shaw, of Dyfi Valley Health, said the practice would be keen to speak to town councillors about their concerns, especially to ensure people aren’t missing out on medical attention.
