Machynlleth town councillors have vowed to raise concerns over guidelines on prescriptions after it emerged the town’s surgery had stopped providing a nine-year-old girl’s epilepsy medication.
The Cambrian News reported last week that Seren Hughes and her family had been told Machynlleth Health Centre would not be able to fulfil the youngster’s prescription, and how Bronglais Hospital consultants would have to step in to ensure vital medication was provided.
That prompted Machynlleth town councillors this week to question the guidelines in place.
At a council meeting on Monday night, councillors agreed to write to local politicians, the Welsh Health Minister Vaughan Gething and the local surgery to raise concerns that other people may not be able to access life-saving medication.
Cllr Rhydian Mason said: “This is in no way a condemnation of our surgery. It struck me there’s obviously a problem.
“The issue with the prescription has now been sorted out, but what sort of situation had the practice been put in to make this decision.
“It’s almost like a cry for help from the surgery that they made this decision that they couldn’t prescribe medication to a nine-year-old girl.”
