A LAMPETER couple campaigning to raise awareness of lung cancer say not enough is being done to target a disease that kills more people than breast and bowel cancers combined.

Steven and Jane Holmes, of Ffarmers, believe much can be done to improve the situation in Wales, which has one of the worst survival and mortality rates in Europe.

The couple – stalwarts of Sarn Helen Running Club – have spoken out during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Jane having previously been diagnosed with the disease despite being a fitness fanatic and lifelong non-smoker.

Steven said: “Jane has just completed the Snowdonia Marathon Eryri, one of the hardest marathons in the UK, proving that nothing is impossible and sending out the message of hope to others with lung cancer.

“I still continue to be shocked by the statistics and the more I read the more I realise how we lack the coverage and knowledge of lung cancer in the public eye.

“We also want to get across the message of hope that this indiscriminate disease need not necessarily be an automatic death sentence.”

Steven and Jane, who have raised over £17,000 for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, say their experience of the NHS was excellent.
