AN Aberystwyth care home manager will take on a gruelling physical challenge each month to raise money for a special all-terrain wheelchair that will help residents enjoy the great outdoors.

Leonie Doran, who works at Hafan y Waun with older adults, has decided to put herself through a range of challenges including the Tough Guy assault course, the Cardiff Half Marathon and an ultra-marathon that will see her cover 100km in 24 hours.

Her decision to raise money for a wheelchair that would enable carers to take residents at the home to the beach or out in the countryside came after one of the residents had asked if she could be taken onto the beach which wasn’t possible because the wheelchair she was in could not cope with the terrain.

Leonie said: “The chair I’ve found is about £2,000 and that’s the one that is looking like it’ll be.

“I thought about it as two staff members took a couple of ladies to the beach and one of them asked if she could go on the beach, but she isn’t mobile and the wheelchair wasn’t able to do it."

Anyone who would like to donate to Leonie’s fundraising efforts can do so on her JustGiving page at justgiving.com/fundraising/leo-beachwheels.

Alternatively, donations can be left at Hafan y Waun or text donations can be made by texting LBWC77 £5 (amount customisable) to 70070.
