Health chiefs are still considering if Aberystwyth University’s Llanbadarn campus could house a mental health services hub.

Work is ongoing into consideration of the campus site for a new hub that would include patient beds. Hywel Dda health board’s director for mental health said there are a range of issues that need to be considered before detailed plans could be drawn up.

As part of its plans for a revamp of mental health services, the health board wants to introduce new mental health hubs at key locations across the board area, including Aberystwyth.

But Dr Warren Lloyd, the associate medical director and clinical director for mental health and learning disabilities services, said there was still significant preparatory work to be completed before any plan for the Llanbadarn campus was drawn up.

He said: “We are looking at the feasibility of developing the Llanbadarn campus building into a community mental health centre but the option remains subject to future due diligence, the business case process and purchase arrangements.”

The community mental health centres (CMHCs) have been proposed as a way of providing mental services in one location, as well as housing community mental health teams and being accessible to patients.

Dr Lloyd said following talks with staff and service users, the Llanbadarn campus had been identified as the preferred option for the Aberystwyth centre.
