A nurse who has gone the extra mile to support children with disabilities and complex needs has received a special award.

Nans Jones, children’s acute health liaison nurse, was surprised by Teresa Owen, executive director of public health for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, with a Betsi Star award after being nominated by her colleague.

Nans, who works at the Child Development Centre in Bangor, started in her post in December 2017 and was integral in setting up a new children’s acute liaison service, the only one of its kind in Wales.

Her colleague, Sarah Hughes, who nominated Nans, said her colleague ensures the health needs of children with disabilities and complex needs are appropriately met if admitted to hospital.

She said: “Since Nan has been in post she has ensured each child admitted onto an acute ward has a hospital passport and those who are awaiting invasive tests receive support.

“She has also ensured that children and young people are provided with information about treatments and appointments in a format that is understandable and practical.

“Nans has gone above and beyond to provide support to families and children and has often gone onto the wards on weekends and evenings to ensure the child’s health needs are met and also to provide support to the families.

“Families feel relaxed, at ease and well supported by Nans and most importantly feel that they are being listened to.”

Nans, who came into this particular role following a successful funding bid through the Welsh Government’s Integrated Care Fund, said she was overwhelmed by the award.

She said: “I’m a bit shocked to receive the award as it came as a big surprise but it is wonderful and I’d like to thank those who have nominated me.”

Teresa Owen, executive director of public health added: “I was delighted to present the Betsi Star Award to Nans, she is a very special member of staff and has gone above and beyond in her role to ensure that children with learning disabilities and complex needs, as well their families, receive the support they need.”
