TELEMEDICINE improvements that are saving patients from Ceredigion from having to make lengthy journeys for routine appointments have been praised by the county’s AM.
Elin Jones visited Aberaeron Hospital to see how telemedicine was allowing patients to attend appointments without having to travel long distances.
Peter Martin, from New Quay, became the first patient to use the videoconferencing facility at the clinic in Aberaeron after he had a total laryngectomy three years ago, meaning he now uses a surgical voice prosthesis to speak. Previously Peter would have to travel to Swansea for specialist support, but can now travel to Aberaeron to be able to get specialist support.
Peter attended the hospital for a session with Macmillan specialist speech and language therapist Danna Evans-Jones where via the videoconferencing facility, they were also linked up with Macmillan’s senior specialist speech and language therapist Sali Curtis.
