A TYWYN nursing home which was prevented from accepting any new admissions after being designated as a “service of concern” has vastly improved in recent months.

In December, the Care and Social Services Inspectorate for Wales published a highly critical report on the Bay Nursing Home in Tywyn.

After unannounced visits inspectors highlighted a number of issues which were non-compliant with regulations. Similar concerns had been raised previously but by December little progress had been made.

It was stated that people were not receiving the care and support they required and the attention of the management was drawn to concerns ranging from weight loss and pressure care to dignity of residents, staff shortages and overall leadership.

The Bay, which is registered to accommodate 30 elderly persons, is owned by JSB Healthcare Ltd.

The inspectors returned in January to check on progress and found that all the non-compliances issues had been addressed.

In their newly-published report they state: “There has been significant progress in the quality of care at the home and in the service’s ability to meet regulatory requirements.

“General management of the home has improved, along with its clinical leadership. Residents receive treatment in a timely manner and their medication is being managed safely.

“Morale among the staff has noticeably lifted and recruitment of permanent nursing staff has improved.

“All staff within the service have worked hard as a team to improve the quality of care within the home.”

A programme of refurbishment is also underway which will improve the environment for the residents.
