DEDICATED staff at Ysbyty Alltwen have marked Dementia Awareness Week by holding an event to help reduce the stigma surrounding the disease, and showcase some of the support services available.
The awareness day held at the hospital on 18 May saw organisations including the Carer’s Trust, Alzheimer’s Society and Mantell Gwynedd come together to provide information and resources to hospital staff, patients and visitors.
The event was supported by Glenda Roberts, 61, from Llannor near Pwllheli who was diagnosed with early onset dementia in her mid-fifties.
She said: “It’s so important to reduce the stigma surrounding dementia so people aren’t so fearful and frightened of receiving a diagnosis.
"Life doesn’t end with a diagnosis of dementia, and as I have found, there is fantastic support available to people.
“I get involved in a range of activities with other people living with dementia including Dementia Walk and Talk, which takes place twice a month. We enjoy going on walks together and in the next few weeks we’re going on the train to Barmouth.
“Without these activities I would stay in the house all day.”
Ann Gallei, 68, made the short trip from her home in Tremadog to support the event.
“Day-to-day life for me is being pleasantly muddled,” she said.
“Since being diagnosed with dementia around 12 months ago the support I’ve received has literally been incredible. I never feel alone, and there is always somebody there to support me.
