Community midwives in north Ceredigion are celebrating after winning two awards in recognition of their skills supporting women having home births.

The team was recognised at this year’s Maternity and Midwifery Awards for their efforts in promoting the home birth service and increasing the local home birth rate significantly. 

The team has also won an Iolanthe Midwifery Trust award which will allow the team to attend an Appropriate Skills and Appropriate Places workshop to improve home birth services. 

Becky Westbury, community midwife team leader for north Ceredigion, said: “The team are thrilled to have been named Team of the Year in the Maternity and Midwifery Awards. 

“We feel we work very well together to provide continuity of care, and care that is individually suited to the needs of women and families.

“We have worked hard to re-establish a home birth service in our area, and are pleased to be offer choice to women.  

“The home birth rate has increased significantly since 2018, and we have had some lovely feedback from women and families about this. 

“As a team we all thoroughly enjoy our jobs and feel privileged to support women and families at such an important time in their lived.”
