An Aberystwyth school pupil ran 60 miles in September to raise money for charity in memory of his Mamgu who he said he only got to meet thanks to the staff at Bronglais Hospital.

Eight-year-old Theo Roberts, who is in Year 4 at Ysgol Gymraeg, is the youngest person to take part in the Hywel Dda Health Charities ‘60 Miles in September’ challenge.

A sponsored virtual walking or running challenge for all ages and abilities, the challenge was undertaken by more than 40 people to raise cash for local hospitals.

Theo completed his 60 miles on Friday at Ysgol Gymraeg, cheered on by fellow pupils and staff.

Initially aiming to raise £60, Theo has smashed his target, collecting £772.28 for his efforts at the time of going to press.

Theo took on the challenge to raise money for Bronglais Hospital’s respiratory department Dyfi ward in memory of his grandmother Auriel Fenton – a former teacher at Penweddig school in Aberystwyth.

“Mamgu died five years ago after battling for years with chronic lung disease,” Theo said.

“The respiratory department at Bronglais did so much for her, and I know I would not have ever got to meet her without everything they did for her.”

Elin Williams, of Hywel Dda Health Charities, said: “We are extremely proud of what he has achieved and the amazing amount of money he has raised for the Dyfi ward at Bronglais Hospital.”

Theo’s fundraising page is still open for donations here.
