ABERYSTWYTH is in danger of losing all its care beds for elderly mentally infirm people following a major U-turn by the county council.

EMI nursing beds at the Hafan y Waun care home in Waunfawr are due to be axed in April.

And now EMI beds which campaigners had hoped would be introduced at the Bodlondeb home in Penparcau could be lost if a new council plan is approved.

A council tender document had initially asked providers interested in taking over the home to guarantee inclusion of a ‘block’ of 10 specialist nursing care beds for people with dementia.

It has now been revealed that Hywel Dda Health Board will not provide funding for such a block of beds and instead look to fund beds on a case-by-case basis.

The Cabinet was due to discuss a new proposal for the scrapping of the requirement for a block of EMI beds at Bodlondeb yesterday (Tuesday) but this has now been postponed until the next Cabinet meeting in three weeks’ time.

Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate and Cllr Alun Lloyd Jones were amongst those who had opposed asking a private provider to take over the home.

Cllr Jones-Southgate said: “I genuinely feel we’ve been let down. They’re steering away from what they’ve said publicly. I’m extremely disturbed at the way this has been dealt with. I’m deeply concerned at what’s been going on behind the scenes. I’d like an open meeting as to why they’ve backtracked.”
