Building work has started on an Aberystwyth extra care housing scheme which it is claimed will help to “modernise the provision of care” for elderly people.

Wales and West Housing’s £9m scheme at Plas Morolwg will see 56 apartments offering extra care services and is expected to open in 2021.

Ceredigion County Council leader Ellen ap Gwynn visited the site to see work progressing and said the development would provide a new facility for Aberystwyth.

She said: “I was very pleased to be invited to view the site and plans for Plas Morolwg, the proposed extra care scheme.

“This new modern facility will give some of our more vulnerable residents the opportunity to live independently in a flat with their own front door, yet to be within easy reach of essential, communal services and 24-hour care when they need it.

“This is part of Ceredigion County Council’s strategy to modernise the provision of care for our elderly residents.

“I look forward to the opening of Plas Morolwg in 2021.”

Shayne Hembrow, Wales and West’s deputy chief executive, welcomed Cllr ap Gwynn to the site, and said: “This is an exciting time for us to be working in partnership with Ceredigion County Council and Welsh Government to bring this extra care scheme to Aberystwyth.

“There is clearly demand in the north Ceredigion area for care and housing for older and vulnerable people under one roof."
