BUILDING work on Cardigan’s new Integrated Care Centre has started following an historic journey to develop brand new fit-for-purpose healthcare services for the local community.
Haydn Lewis, a former local and county councillor who, as a member of the League of Friends, has campaigned for a new facility for the town for over 40 years, was invited to cut the first sod at the site of the Bathhouse development together with the chair of Hywel Dda Health Board, Bernardine Rees.
Cllr Lewis said: “I hope that it becomes a centre of quality and excellence that keeps us all out of hospital if at all possible.”
Mrs Rees added: “This has been a long and drawn-out process, and has not been without its challenges.
"I would like to pay tribute to the people of Cardigan for bearing with us while we have been doing everything necessary to ensure that we have got it right first time.
"As well as providing a modern, fit for purpose healthcare service for the local population including a GP practice, dental service and pharmacy, the new centre will bring care closer to home and in the community."
The new centre is due to open in late 2019.
