An event planner from Aberystwyth who specialises in weddings has once again been helping people to tie the knot on TV.

In the popular show, Priodas Pum Mil, Alaw Griffiths - who runs Calon Wedding Planning as well as working at Aberystwyth Arts Centre - can be seen advising the family and friends of brides and grooms across Wales who have been given the task of arranging a wedding for £5,000.

The average spend on a wedding these days is about £20,000, so that’s quite a challenge, but Alaw knows how to help the organisers, having worked on all three series of the show, and from her own experience organising events.

Regular viewers of Priodas Pum Mil will have seen people having to beg, borrow and rely on the flair and generosity of the local community.

The couple don’t get to know any details of the arrangements until the big day, but the hope is that they will enjoy an unforgettable wedding, organised by loved ones.

Trystan Ellis Morris and Emma Walford present the series, with Alaw, a 35-year-old mother-of-two who lives in Llanbadarn, on hand to offer help and guidance.

“I sit down with the presenters and we discuss what has been organised for the bride and groom,” said Alaw, who works as the artistic programme co-ordinator for Aberystwyth Arts Centre, alongside running her own business.

“I also go to the location of the wedding, the day before, and help set everything up, but you don’t see that on screen.

“On the day of the wedding I look after all the timings. We have to remember that there are cameras there, filming it all, and although it’s not live you can’t stop the wedding to film something again, so I take care of the wedding side of things so the TV crew can get on with filming the event.”

When Alaw was asked to take part in the show, the timing wasn’t ideal.

“I got a call from the executive producer of the programme who asked me to take part in the first series of a new show,” Alaw explained.

“I was pregnant at the time so I thought long and hard about it. The National Library of Wales also approached me to help them with their weddings. In the end I decided to go for both because life is too short.”

And it turned out to be a good decision for Alaw.

“I’m so glad that I decided to be part of the programme,” she said.

“I feel really glad, and proud, to be able to give these couples, who are so deserving, the opportunity to get married.”

Priodas Pum Mil is on Tuesdays at 8pm, with English subtitles. It’s also available on demand on s4c.cymru, BBC iPlayer and other platforms.
