Madam,

The High Court ruling on the EU referendum has put the cat among the pigeons.

It reminds us that there was no clear vote to leave for, although Wales, like England, voted by a narrow margin to leave the EU; only in our outmoded ‘first past the post’ system would anyone dare to suggest that the 52/48 per cent overall result was a “clear popular mandate”.

If a large crowd were to put up their hands, we would be hard pushed to notice that marginally, over half voted for ‘Leave’.

The vote for Brexit was 52 per cent, but the decision was only made by a majority of four per cent, so disenfranchising 48 per cent of the population. So of course 23 June should be taken as “advisory” and parliament left to consider, with the option of going either way.

A majority of the good people of Gwynedd know which way their bread is buttered. They voted to remain. Sadly, this wasn’t the case across Wales.

Extravagant promises were made by Nigel Farage, Nathan Gill and Boris Johnson, politicians who had no power to enact these measures.

We now have a ‘Remain’ prime minister who never made these promises and has no obligation to honour them.

Yours etc,

Quentin Deakin, Corbett Avenue, Tywyn.
