Madam,

I write regarding Patrick O’Brien’s column in the Cambrian News last week, ‘County council should intervene over rotting university properties’.

Laura Place is in Rheidol ward, which I represent on Ceredigion County Council. Many residents of the ward expressed their concerns to me regarding the state of the university-owned buildings on this street in the local election campaign earlier this year. As councillor, I am very aware of the historical and architectural importance of these buildings and share residents’ concerns.

Prof Elizabeth Treasure, the university’s vice-chancellor, addressed a meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council’s General Management Committee in June 2017. I raised this issue, emphasising that these buildings must not be allowed to deteriorate further. Prof Treasure replied that she was also concerned about the condition of these properties and that the university will commission work to help them reach a decision about the future of these buildings.

I will be following this work closely and will ask the county council to take action if progress is too slow.

Yours etc,

Cllr Endaf Edwards, Aberystwyth Rheidol ward, Ceredigion County Council.
