PORTHMADOG Hockey club has used new grant money to help “enrich” training sessions for juniors and seniors alike.

The Town’s Women’s Hockey Club was one of several sports organisations across Dwyfor and Meirionnydd which received money from Gwynedd Council to help improve the county’s sporting prowess.

The grant money from Gwynedd Community Chest as well as Gwynedd Council’s Healthy Gwynedd programme aims to promote fitness and help clubs and sport institutions within the county to deliver improved sport opportunities for Gwynedd residents.

The Community Chest is a national scheme funded by Sport Wales through the Big Lottery Fund and administered locally by county councils.

A spokesperson for Porthmadog Women’s Hockey Club said: “We received funding towards sending our ladies’ captain Ceri Ann Williams on a professional coaching course.

“Following the course, we will have a qualified member with additional skills to be able to enrich our training sessions for the juniors and seniors."

Similarly Dolgellau Athletic AAFC also received a grant to send coaches on training courses.

In the latest meeting of the Gwynedd Community Chest, grants were allocated to a number of junior football clubs in Gwynedd to help buy equipment, leasing training pitches for new teams and ages, and for coaching courses for the volunteers that run the clubs.

These courses include First Aid, Children’s Well-Being, Football Leaders and Licences.

The successful football clubs that have received a Gwynedd Community Chest Grant included Abermaw Junior Football Club and Nefyn Junior Football Club amidst a series of other junior teams.
