Madam,

As someone who has done a great deal of cycling over the years I was somewhat dismayed by the slightly holier-than-thou attitude of John Gee’s letter concerning dangerous drivers.

I think that cyclists would be more likely to get a sympathetic hearing from the general public if some of our numbers didn’t ride on the pavements, cycle the wrong way down one way streets and cycle through red lights.

In particular, if you are going to do these things then please, please, please have a bell on your bike so that you can warn pedestrians that you are coming up behind them.

I am not, of course, seeking to condone dangerous drivers, but I do think that the cycling lobby needs to consider the mote in its own eye before shouting too loudly about others.
